Caracoles: New Paths of Resistance/ Caracoles: los nuevos caminos de la resistencia

(Spanish with English subtitles, 42 minutes, 2003)

Produced in August 2003 in the communities of Oventik and Morelia by 18 Zapatista video makers, Caracoles is a celebration of the death of the Aguascalientes and the birth of the Caracoles and the Good Government Assemblies. Various members of the Zapatista leadership discuss how these changes will affect internal political and economic processes, gender relations, and their relationship to international civil society. The video is an open call to join with the Zapatista communities in their struggle for recognition of their autonomy and in their fight against neo-liberal economic policies and globalization.

Desde 1994, los pueblos indígenas zapatistas han formado 30 Municipios Autónomos rebeldes que hoy abarcan más de la mitad del territorio de Chiapas. Para enfrentar los problemas del autogobierno y para construir un puente más directo con el mundo, anuncian el nacimiento de Los Caracoles, que reemplazarán a los centros regionales, culturales y políticos llamados Aguascalientes.

Para los días 8,9 y 10 de agosto del 2003 se hace una invitación abierta a llegar a tierra zapatista para festejar este nacimiento. “ Dicen que decían que con el caracol se llamaba al colectivo para que la palabra fuera de uno a otro y naciera el acuerdo... que el caracol era ayuda para que el oído escuchara incluso la palabra más lejana.”
